When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness?
Three years ago.
I really don’t have one. I just show up and put on a brave face.
Least favorite workout?
It was one of the Open workouts that involved over the bar burpees. I actually tried to just lay down and play dead. It was awful. Elizabeth Kleid saw the whole thing.
Least favorite movement?
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Let’s see. I am your classic introvert, so if you call I probably won’t answer and if you want to meet up, I’m probably going to pass. We can text, though and my gif game is on point. I teach middle school language arts and I can’t wait for summer so that I can eat my lunch without the sound of 300 students in the background and the simple pleasure of being able to go pee when I need to go pee. I have an eleven-year-old daughter named Lilly who simultaneously pushes me to the edge of my breaking point but also makes me wonder how I am going survive an empty nest. (Is it respectable to make your child feel like they can’t live without you? Asking for a friend.) I am married to Josh, and he’s just the best. I have a dog named Luke and a cat named Katy. When the opportunity arises, we go on adventures!
What were you doing before you joined CS&F?
My initial interest in Crossfit happened when I saw some really amazing physical transformations from my husband and a college friend. They were talking about these crazy WODS and exuding a confidence I hadn’t noticed before. Because I am secretly competitive, I had to prove that I could do those things too, so I joined forces with CNA and eventually moved to CS&F when my work schedule changed, and I needed to workout closer to home.
What was the first CD you bought?
This is really a two-part question for me. The first cd I ever owned was Aerosmith “Big Ones” as a Christmas present. I’m not sure that it was entirely normal/appropriate for an impassioned eleven year old to be singing, “What did her daddy doooo?” but hey, it was a different time. My first official cd purchase was for a group named Candlebox. If you’re fortunate enough to not know who they are, please don’t google them. They’re actually a lot worse than they sound.
Fun Fact: Candlebox is on tour with Marcy Playground and Dishwalla, soooo there’s that.
Favorite cheat meal?
Um, just a few respectable stalks of celery with a side of six to ten raisins. Just kidding. Probably refried beans, dill pickle chips, and some Aldi’s chocolate. (Classy, I know.)
What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them?
My main goal was to keep myself from binge eating the above cheat meal for long periods of time and to become a physically stronger and more confident individual. Thanks to Rachel, I keep my nutrition in check (most of the time) and the other coaches help me with the rest. (fist bump)
Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
Strict pull up last year! That movement has been the holy grail of my conditioning.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?
Just show up and do NOT compare yourself to other people in the gym. Everyone is on their own path. Be kind to yourself and remember that any movement is better than no movement. 🙂
Something you might not know about me is?
I got to pet lions on a trip to South Africa. It sounds cool at first, but once the scene unfolded not so much. First, you enter an enclosure surrounded by hot electrical wires followed by instructions like, “Don’t turn your back to them or they will attack.” So, naturally, I was terrified and convinced that the lions could sense my fear, and I would die soon. There is photographic evidence of this exchange, but it’s just me trying not to cry and silently apologizing to my family and friends back home.
