March Athlete of the Month: Mike Clifford

When did you start with CS&F? 

November of 2013.  Allyson had joined CS&F earlier that year when it opened.  She started working for them shortly after that and was patiently encouraging me to try it out.  It took several months to get me in there, and I’m proud to say that I was one of her first personal training clients.

Least Favorite WOD?  

Fran…the last time I did this WOD ( in a competition) I hit a state of mind I’ve never been too before.  Don’t want to go back!

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.)

I’ve been married to Allyson for 14 years, and we have two children Madelyn (9) and Preston (7).  I love being a dad to those two kids and am undeniably blessed to have Ally (my best friend J) by my side along the way.  I spent 5 years in the U.S. Navy right out of high school, and I now get to work for an awesome company called Thrivent Financial, helping people be wise with money.  I love playing just about any sport, but tend to be around the baseball fields and golf courses most.  Keep me outdoors, and I’m content. 

What were you doing before coming to CS&F?  

Not sure really.  Overeating, bicep curls and playing softball.  Wasn’t in much of a routine of anything. 

What were your thoughts after your first workout at CS&F?  

Allyson put me through a workout, and I laid on the ground for several minutes (after finishing).  I do remember thinking “Can’t believe I didn’t quit in the middle of that @#$%”  Didn’t know that I had that kind of mental strength until that moment.    

What were your goals when joining CS&F?  

I really wanted to be held accountable and do something consistent for more than just a couple weeks. No specific physical goals, just wanted to see my potential.

Have you achieved any of those goals?  

Yes…I have been a consistent morning class attendee for over 3 years now.  It feels great to be part of this community and every now and then surprise myself.  It took about 2 ½ years, but I finally got my double-unders.

Has CS&F affected your life outside the Gym? 

For sure.  I started my fitnes journey in the middle of a really tough situation at work in 2013.  I really do feel like I’m more confident in myself and my overall health is definitely better.  When I get to work out in the morning, I am more productive in every other part of my life.   

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?  

I value the community and friendships that CS&F has given me.  Some awesome friendships have come from my time here, and I wouldn’t trade it.  I love that my wife feels the same way that I do about this place.  She loves working here!

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness? 

Commit to a class time that works for you and your schedule and stick to it.  You will quickly build a bond with the people and see real progress in reaching your goals. 

Something you might not know about me is?  

While I was in the Navy from 1997-2002, I got to serve with my two younger brothers (Aaron and Jay) in San Diego, CA.  All three of us had orders on the same base for about 1 year.
