Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).

Vickie and I have 2 kids Callie and Corban who are 11 and 9.  We’re lucky to have both parents pretty close in Murphy NC as well as Panama City Beach where we both grew up.  My father was a golf pro on tour for six or seven years in the late 60’s and early 70’s before settling down as a club pro so it’s easy to imagine what sport I played growing up.  The smell of freshly cut grass on a golf course is still ingrained in my brain so it probably explains why I don’t mind cutting my lawn.  I worked for USAir while going to FSU which let me travel all over the world while I was in school.  For the last 20 years I’ve worked as a 3D software specialist.  I work with companies that use my companies software to make special effects in film and tv.  I still try to play golf but mostly with the kids.

What were you doing before CrossFit? 

Not much. I did a round of p-90x which left me feeling great but also with that feeling of “now what”?   I mowed my grass a lot.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout? 

How can I be that out of shape?

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? 

Mostly to not feel so broken down.  When I reached forty my back and neck hurt quite a bit from sitting at a computer all day.  I’ve never had a weight problem, so always thought that meant I was doing ok. I’m down probably 15 lbs since then so I was carrying around a bit.  It didn’t take long before I felt great and started reading about different lifting benchmarks.  I really wanted a body weight snatch when I started CSF.  I’m still after an elusive muscle up.

Have you achieved any of those goals? 

I managed a body weight snatch twice last year. 

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?

More than I could have imagined.  I feel it makes me a better husband and a better dad by not just being a bystander with my kids activities.  I hope to keep running circles around them as long as possible.  I notice my fitness level in lots of little things like not getting near as tired or winded mowing and being able to give my kids piggyback rides up the stairs.  They think it’s cool I can take two steps at a time.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? 

That’s so hard to nail down. Every day it seems someone achieves something they’ve been struggling with or hits a mark they’ve been working toward. That is what never gets old.  I really enjoy the competitions and the camaraderie that goes along with it.  That body weight snatch was pretty good too.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Cumming?

Keep showing up. It’s almost cliche but the hardest part is getting through the door. At some point (and it can take time) that feeling fades and you start looking forward to what you can accomplish next.
