July Athlete of the Month: Carmen Ames

When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness?  (I can’t remember exactly when I started at Cumming so I need help with that). When I started attending CS&F I was a “punchcard” member then decided this was the place for me.

Favorite Workout?  Favorite?!  That’s funny.  CrossFit workouts are challenging and can really push you to your limits.  But in all seriousness I do love Grace. She’s quick and easy.

Least Favorite Workout?  Fran is not a fave because thrusters.

Favorite Movement? I love coming to the gym so I have several favorite movements.  Squats. Bench press. Strict press.  Deadlifts. All the controlled movements. Also talking does that count?!?!

Least favorite Movement?  Barbell thrusters are my least favorite movement.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.). I’m a 46 year old mother to two teenage boys, Jade and Zach. I’m married to my best friend, Jason Ames. I stopped working at the Department of Family and Children’s Services when our first born was a baby. So fortunately I am able to be home and available for whatever the boys need.  We live on the lake which is awesome. A few years ago we got our first wake boat and now we love to wake surf. We also love to going snow skiing. I’m not that great yet but it’s fun! I’ve been doing CrossFit for 8 years now.

What were you doing before you joined CS&F? Before joining Cumming strength and fitness I was at another CrossFit gym having a great time. Life changes and so do our physical and mental/emotional needs. So on to CS&F I moved.

Favorite music to workout to?  My favorite music in general is comical to most people but I LOVE techno. I don’t just like to workout to it.

Favorite Cheat meal?  Cheat meal?!  I love lots of fun food.  If I had to cheat all the time on one thing it would be sushi!

What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them? I had been doing CrossFit for several years prior to joining CS&F and had many PRs but as I came here my main goal was to enjoy working out and making new friends.  I’ve definitely achieved those goals.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
Nothing specific I just love being a member of this gym.  I have always felt welcomed and loved here.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?  I would tell them that it may seem like everyone has been here for years but that’s not the case.  It’s hard starting a new place and feeling left out.  Also I’d say to not try to feel like you have to lift heavy right away. Go at your own pace.

Something we might not know about you is? Spanish was my first language and now I don’t know how to speak but a few words!
