January Athlete of the Month: Barb Johnston

When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness?

I can’t remember exactly when I started at CS&F but I just had my 3 year anniversary!  🙂

Favorite Workout?

Anything with a barbell- especially cleans, or a good chipper workout.

Least Favorite Workout?

Anything at all with burpees or running.  It has been said to me during a burpee workout:  “Come on, you’re almost done…(then she sees me do a burpee) just kidding, you have a while to go.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a physical therapist – I see a lot of sports med/orthopedic and spine patients and I do a LOT of dry needling. I love getting to see how my treatments improve a person’s ability to do what ever it is that they love.  It’s been my passion since I was 15 – yep, I knew what I wanted to do way back then! I grew up running track (the 100m sprint, 200m sprint and 400m relay) and doing local 10ks and half marathons.  (Yes, at one time I loved running) I am married to Brent Johnston- the best CrossFit coach on the planet. Seriously though- he’s amazing and I’m lucky he picked me to do life with. We have 4 kids- Camden (12), Hollyn (10) and twin boys, Sutton and Boden (8).  Brent had no idea what he was getting into when he picked me!

What were you doing before you joined CS&F?

Before I joined CS&F I had been at a couple of different CF gyms.  Before that, I was a gym rat- did several different types of classes/week- Spin, step, body pump, etc.

What was the first CD you bought?

I’m not sure but I think the first cassette tape I bought was either Motley Crue, Beastie Boys or New Kids on the Block

Favorite Cheat meal?

Ice cream or Hibachi

What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them?

My goals when I joined CS&F were to do a bar muscle up, a handstand, and a butterfly pull up.

Those are still my goals…My fitness journey is an ever continuing journey and it ebbs and flows depending on the life of my kids. Right now, my kids’ schedules and my job keep me from being in there as often as I’d like so I know that I have to keep my goals on an ebb and flow journey as well. Now, while I still have those goals, I also have the goal of just getting into the gym as often as I can. CrossFit is something I plan to do for years to come- as long as my body will let me.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?

A special memory would be doing a competition with Jenny Gregouy-Bouton and taking first place in the Masters category. She’s my comp partner and I love competing with her. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we work well together.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?

Advice for a newbie to CS&F: Get involved, come to different classes if your schedule allows to meet different people and experience different coaches. Also, CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR! A little friendly competition is good but it’s also good to remember that at the end of the day, you are there to be better than you were yesterday.

Something you might not know about me is?

I had 5 ferrets when I was in college and worked at a pet store. And, I have a lot of useless celebrity knowledge. I love celebrity gossip, it’s fitting that my kids are actors, lol.
