December Athlete of the Month: Jill Maddox

When did you start doing with CS&F? November 2013

Favorite Workout? I generally prefer the longer, endurance WODs.  Partner and team WODs are also great!  If there’s a workout with running and kettlebells, chances are I’ll be happy!

Least Favorite Workout?  Any WOD that combines thrusters and burpees is just not nice.  I’m also usually skeptical of the short, sprint WODs – those usually involve me trying to find my lungs after it’s done.

 Favorite Lift?  Tough one…I like the deadlift, push press, and power clean. 

Least favorite lift?  Snatch

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.). I grew up in Florida (Tampa area) and went to school at the University of Florida (Go Gators!)  I left Florida for a Master’s program at the University of Tennessee and later got a doctoral degree back at Florida.  I landed my first job in Atlanta and have been here ever since.  Right before moving to Atlanta, I got set up on my first (and only) blind date…turned out to be a good one because we got married 2 years later.  Fast forward to now and we have 3 kids, ages 8, 6 and 2.  I have worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for the last 12 years, working with hearing-impaired and Deaf children.  I’m not so much clinical now – instead I’m managing a team of 24 and counting.  I also have the opportunity to interface with groups in the state working to make pediatric Audiological and Early Intervention services more accessible to kids in Georgia.  I generally stay pretty busy…but I wouldn’t have it any other way. J

What were you doing before CS&F?  I did the globo-gym thing and a smaller gym where we trained with dumbbells and TRX.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?  I was super nervous because I had never done any weight training with a barbell.  But I loved the first WOD (despite being totally wiped out)!  I loved that it involved multiple movements and I could set a time goal for myself.  Of course I didn’t reach my goal, but I could tell the workouts would be set up in a way where I could at least set a goal for myself and work towards something.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?  To feel stronger.  I’ve always been on the thin-side and adding strength has always been a challenge for me. 

Have you achieved any of those goals?  Yes!!  I’m doing way more than I thought I ever could.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?  Yes!  I have met some of the absolute best people at the gym.  I love that on weeks that get busy and I can’t get in as much as I’d like, people send me messages checking on me.  CS&F really is way more than a gym!

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?  Pretty much anytime we do a Hero WOD I feel like I have achieved something more than just getting a workout in.  I love fighting through a set of tasks that at first glance looks like it is more than can be done.  And to do that besides a group of truly amazing people while honoring someone or something bigger than you is just awesome!

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Cumming?  Just come in!  Seeing people of all ages and stages working hard, cheering each other on, and accomplishing some pretty cool things will affirm for you that you’re in the right place.

Something you might not know about me is?  I’m always looking to grow and experience new things…this Spring I’ll be teaching clinical practice at Georgia State, and because I have grown to love rowing at the gym, I’m signing up to learn to row on the water.
