August Athlete of the month: Dean Basher

When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness? Will be 4 years this December!

Favorite Workout? Any workout where I get to lift a lot of heavy weight. Isabelle and 12 Days of Christmas are always favorites too.

Least Favorite Workout?  Being a bigger feller I despise anything with a lot of running or burpees. Lets just say I do not run like a Gazelle!

Favorite Movement? Love me some Back/Front Squats, Dead-lifts and Squat Cleans. Hell Yeah!!

Least favorite Movement? Thrusters for sure and Double-Unders. Been doing CF for almost 5 years now and DU are not my friend no matter how hard i try cannot seem to string more than 3 together.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).

I have been with my wife for over 4 years and we have 2 kids. I have a 13 year old stepdaughter and my son who will be 1 year old in September. Grew up in a big Lebanese family I am the youngest out of 6 kids with 4 older sisters. I am originally from the North East but been down south now for about 25 years, I know its hard to tell that because of my strong southern accent LOL. Played ice hockey for about 13 years, and wrestled. I really enjoy cooking and grilling out for the family and friends as well.

What were you doing before you joined CS&F?  Was a Globo-Gym guy for many many years.

What was the first CD you bought?  Actually bought Pearl-Jam Ten by accident when I was in high-school it had just came out and it became one of my favorite CD’s ever.

Favorite Cheat meal? Cold beer and wings, Cold beer and pizza, Ice cream with warm chocolate chip cookies….dang that’s a lot of cheat meals. Love living life in moderation though.

What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them? I had many goals in mind, with many I have accomplished. Then as time goes on after almost 4 years new ones arise. One that sticks out the most is i really want to get to 500# back squat, which I am currently inching closer too with each squat cycle.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? Many personal achievements since i have been a member inside & outside the gym. Got married to the love of my life and had a son who is my best little buddy, as well as my step daughter is a new best friend. I remember when I started my CF journey down in Tampa, and when I had to move back up to GA I thought I would never be able to find a box like I had there, until I joined which at the time was Cross-fit Cumming. Our CSF Family is a true blessing and have developed some great friendships over the years and am truly grateful for what Jill and Hunter have created for us.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?  I have been an athlete my entire life and CF always intimidated me. Don’t let it deter you if you are hesitant . CF has changed my life in so many ways. I am stronger mentally, physically and all around am the strongest I have ever been. Doesn’t matter your age, skill level, or athletic prowess there is a home for everyone at CSF, just come in and try it you will love it along with the coaches and awesome community who are always supportive and encouraging.

Something you might not know about me is? When I was a kid I was bit overweight and was bullied. I was introduced to the gym & working out by my older brother. I used that as an outlet to get mentally and physically stronger so I could defend myself. I am an advocate against kids getting bullied as I believe no kid should deal with that in any form.
