August Athlete of the Month: Brent Stevens

When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness? 

January-ish of 2015, I think.

Favorite Workout?  

It used to be anything that took longer than 30 minutes, now it is anything that takes less than 5. I need to work on that.

Least Favorite Workout?  

Anything that has a repeat of burpees or pull-ups, or Burpee pull-ups.

Favorite Movement? 

Anything with a Barbell that does not go overhead.

Least Favorite Movement? 

Anything gymnastics related, especially pull-ups.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in South Dakota, left after high school to start college in Arizona and eventually moved back to SD to graduate. I started at the company I am at now in 1998 and have worked there for a total of 18+ years. I took a short 18 month break and went to work for a sports marketing company but missed what I left and they took me back. We moved to Atlanta in the fall of 2002 after Shelley and I got married that summer in Minneapolis. We have two children, Parker is 13 and will be in 7th grade at Vickory Creek Middle and Paityn is 9 and going to be in 4th at Kelly Mill Elementary. In my free time I love spending time at our cabin on the river outside of Murphy, NC with my family and friends. I love fishing and hunting and try to travel as much as I can across North America to do it (as much as Shelley will allow).

What were you doing before you joined CS&F?  

I played tennis after moving to GA but that was about it. While in HS and College I played soccer to keep active but not really much after that.

What was the first CD you bought?  

I know the first album I bought was Van Halen 1984, I honestly don’t remember the first CD I bought. I worked at a “record shop” in high school so I had hundreds of CD’s by the time I left for college.

Favorite Cheat meal? 

Sorry, its not pop tarts! Yellow cake, chocolate frosting and vanilla ice cream. That counts as a meal right?

What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them? 

I got into CF after I had my left knee replaced. My friend talked me into trying to get in shape after he talked my into swimming and biking and told me it would be fun!!! When I moved over to CS&F it was to really focus my training on doing an IronMan triathlon that fall. I can honestly say without the training I received from Brent and the push I got from others at the gym I never would have been able to complete it.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?  

The biggest one is probably making the podium for my division at the Ironman we did. I never could have done it without the group that we trained with and took to NC. It was an amazing experience.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?   

Go into it with an open mind and leave your ego at the door. There will always be someone that is stronger, quicker, and in better shape than you. In my case that is EVERYONE! but this group will push you and pull you along the entire way if you open up and let them. They truly care about you and become and extension of your family.

Something you might not know about me is?   

I am 50% rebuilt, you can call me the $1,000,000 man. This last December I had my 15 orthopedic surgery in the past 25 years. I have three joints replaced (both knees and a shoulder), I have had both ankles rebuilt, back surgery, thumb surgery, and multiple knee and shoulder surgeries prior to replacements. After every one I keep telling myself it is the last and I am going to come back stronger. The last two years have been difficult as I have been out for most of it and not able to work out because of being in rehab, but with the community from the gym and not ever giving up on it, no one ever gave up on me and the gym family was always glad to see me and really gave me the push I needed to get back into it. So now this time for sure is the last and I WILL come back stronger.
