When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness? We started about 4 years ago.
Favorite Workout? Allison – I do not really have a favorite workout. I like the longer workouts. Stephen – I enjoy the hero workouts. I like having some meaning behind the workouts to think about and honor the heroes.
Least Favorite Workout? Stephen – Anything that is an all-out sprint like Fran. At this point I am not built or mentally tough enough to push that wall.
Favorite Movement? Allison – deadliftsStephen – Strict Press or Deadlifts
Least favorite Movement? Allison – snatchesStephen – Thrusters with wall balls close behind.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.). We are a family of 5. Allison is a 4th grade teacher at Mt. Pisgah Christian School and Stephen is a Store Director for Target. Our three children keep us remarkably busy. Erin is 12 and is a cheerleader, swimmer, and a member of the track team. Evan is 9 and plays soccer, swims, and is interested in playing football. Eli is almost 3. When we are not driving kids around to their activities, we enjoy going to our family’s cabin at Lake Burton and hanging out with friends and family.
What were you doing before you joined CS&F? We were into spin classes and had been working out at a gym in Vickery (with Coach Scott) for about a year that ended up closing.
What was the first CD you bought? Allison – Whitney HoustonStephen – CD I can’t tell you it might have been 2 Live Crew. However, I can definitely tell you my first cassette tape was Michael Jackson Thriller. I had the coat and glove to go with it. Had to buy the cassette again after I wore the 1st one out.
Favorite Cheat meal? Allison – Going out to eat.Stephen – Do not have a cheat meal. That means I probably need to be better with nutrition. I would eat Chicken Tenders or Fried Chicken every day if I could.
What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them? Allison – My initial goals were to get stronger and lose weight. I have not met those goals yet. I am working on balance now. I am thankful for the time I have had recently to focus on fitness. I have had more time and have been able to make it to the gym 6 days a week. I have also been working on getting 7 – 8 hours of sleep each night and Stephen – To not die! So far so good. I was really intimated when I started as I always considered CrossFit people to be a little crazy. Bad news is that I was right they are more than a little crazy. Good news is that they are some amazing people and I am more than happy to be one of them now.
Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here? Allison – I am normally up at the lake on Memorial Day so I had never done Murph before this year. I did half and loved it! Stephen – The night I achieved my first bar muscle up. I had been working on it quietly in warmups and the night I achieved it I felt so much positivity and encouragement in the gym toward me it was crazy. I still have the video on my phone and if I am having a really bad day, I will pull it out and watch it.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness? Allison – This community is very supportive. Everybody is working toward their own personal goals. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Come in, do your best, and have fun. Stephen – Just show up! Every workout will make you better; it doesn’t matter if you are first or last in the workout. We have all been there and will be there again. Everyone has something to offer even the newest member in the gym and we are all happy you are here.
Something we might not know about you is?We both swam all the way thru College, Allison at the University of Denver, and Stephen at Western Kentucky University. Our college teams swam in the same conference and against each other when Denver Moved up to D1 and Western added a women’s team. We both swam the same event in college the 200 Butterfly. We met thru college swimming friends at a bar in Buckhead called Moondog’s and it’s also possible that we spent some time at Hole in the Wall underneath Moondog’s as well.
