- When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness?
- March 2019
- Favorite Workout?
- DT, but I love any weightlifting workouts
- Least Favorite Workout?
- Fran.
- Favorite Movement?
- Squats
- Least favorite Movement?
- I dread any workout that includes Thrusters
- Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
- I have a great family. My wonderful, supportive wife, Karen, twin boys aged 18 (Max and Miles) and 2 incredible step daughters (Hannah (21) and Hayley (18)), so much of my non-work life is focused on my family. Kids events and activities, family outings and family time has always been my priority. In my spare time (which is pretty rare!) I love to explore technology, to work around the house and to build things. I love to learn, so most of my spare time is spent learning, testing and applying. Whether it’s learning how to build furniture, how to improve the quality of my lawn or how to build a high speed wireless network at my home, figuring things out is what keeps my brain happy!
- What were you doing before you joined CS&F?
- Before joining CS&F my fitness routine was mostly just working in the yard. I routinely hit my 10,000 step goal daily, but didn’t do much of anything else for strength, fitness or cardio health.
- Favorite music to workout to?
- Anything upbeat and loud!
- Favorite Cheat meal?
- I love pasta of all kinds!
- What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved them?
- Joining CS&F was my response to my mid-life crisis. I was 49 years old, had just gotten the results of my annual physical blood work and, for the first time, started showing signs of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. What a wakeup call for me! I decided that day that I was going to take charge of my health and avoid medication for as long as possible. I had driven by CS&F many times, but wasn’t sure what it was all about so I looked at the website, saw Brent Johnston’s photo and knew that was where I needed to be. Brent and I had worked together years prior and I had always been a big fan of his, so seeing that he was a coach at CS&F was a sign for me. Amazingly since working out at CS&F, my next 2 annual checkups have been perfect. Cholesterol and blood pressure are either
normal or better than normal. How great to be aging backwards!!!

- Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
- I love the people here. The workouts continue to challenge me and, frankly, sometimes make me want to skip, but knowing there are friends that will give me a hard time for not showing up is truly what I treasure about this place. I’ve tackled so many new things I never thought I’d do (yes, you, handstand pushups!) just because people I like challenged me to try them. I can work out and be exhausted anywhere (including at home), but it’s the amazing friends here that keep me coming back day after day! I’m 2+ years in and still get up early and come 4-5 times every week. That’s definitely NOT because I love to work out, but because I love the people and I am thrilled with the results.
- What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?
- Just jump in and get moving. There are so many amazing people here that can help you understand what to do and how to do it, that you just have to get out of your own way and get started. It’s hard work, but the most rewarding thing I have ever done for myself.
- Something we might not know about you is?
- 6 years ago I thought I could keep up with my kids on the trampoline and learned how to do flips. My body quickly reminded me that I was in no shape to do those and I almost had my leg amputated because a flip ended up tearing up my knee so badly that it was almost beyond repair. I am pleased to report that I had an amazing surgeon that put me back together so I could maintain my quality of life. Surprisingly my time at CS&F has done nothing but help my recovery. I now have more strength and flexibility in the damaged knee than I did before the accident!
