April Athletes of the Month: The Bassham’s

When did you start with Cumming Strength and Fitness?
Mindy – August 2015
Blake – August 2015
Charlie – March 2016

Favorite Workout?
Mindy – Cindy
Blake – none of them
Charlie – Don’t have one but I have fond memories of 17.3 just because I got farther than I
thought I would.

Least Favorite Workout?
Mindy – none
Blake – anything with running
Charlie – 400m walking lunges. Will cherry pick every time.

Favorite Movement?
Mindy – bench press and pullups
Charlie – Cleans

Least favorite Movement?
Mindy – Back squats (I hate them!!)
Blake – running
Charlie – man makers are 1 through 10 on my top 10 least favorite movements

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military,
interests, etc.).
Mindy
I am an only child, from a small town in Louisiana, called Ruston! All of my life I’ve been active,
worked out, and played sports. Growing up, my parents always worked out everyday and
stayed in shape, so for me, it was just part of everyday life. I love working out and staying
active. I met Charlie in the summer of 1994. We worked in a grocery store in my hometown.
We married the next summer and I moved out here with him. We had our daughter in 1997 and
Blake in 2001. I love spending time with my family, working out, and cooking.

Blake – Senior in high school and will be attending UNG next year pursuing a degree in political
science/pre-law.

Charlie – My dad was in the Air Force so I feel like I am from all over. After all these years,
“home” is still where I am currently living. Growing up I was heavily involved in sports but not so
much as an adult. I have always joked that my favorite workout is “sitting and eating” but there
is probably a lot of truth to that. I am currently the CTO of a small startup company in the
agriculture technology space. My favorite thing to do is to casually hang out or have a nice
meal with Mindy and the kids, which we do often. So many great conversations!

What were you doing before you joined CS&F?
Mindy – I ran 3 or 4 days per week
Blake – Competitive swimmer
Charlie – rowing machine and stationary recumbent bike

What was the first CD you bought?
Mindy – I don’t remember my first cd, but I am pretty sure that Michael Jackson Thriller was one
my first cassette tapes to buy
Charlie – KISS Rock and Roll Over was the first vinyl album I owned. CDs came much later

Favorite Cheat meal?
We would all say Mexican. Chips and salsa and all of it.

What were your goals when joining CS&F and have you achieved
them?
Mindy – Honestly I think, since I realized that I wasn’t in as good of shape as I thought I was, my
goal was just to get there, get stronger, and to be in the best shape of my life. I feel like I’ve
made great progress but I can always get strong and can always improve form and technique
on everything so to me, the sky’s the limit!
Charlie – to be a healthier version of myself everyday and to regain my fitness so I can continue
to enjoy life as I get older

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during
your time here?
Mindy – I’ve made some awesome friendships here at CS&F. I love people and being around
people and I’m so blessed to have such a great family at CS&F. As far as achievements go, I
didn’t think I as ever going to get kipping. One day in class, Caitlin had the magic piece of
advice for me and it just clicked. Even though my kipping is not perfect, I can do it now, so
made me happy! I just love CS&F! Its my happy place!
Charlie – I always love working out with my CS&F family. Great memories over the last several
years. My favorite memories are the workouts with Mindy and Blake. My biggest achievement
so far is I have lost over 40lbs in the last six months while improving my fitness level.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming
Strength and Fitness?
Mindy – First of all, welcome to the family! Just keep coming, never give up. You’re here and
you’re doing. Just keep it up and you will see results! You’ll get strong and find muscles that
you didn’t know that you had.
Charlie – Just show up. Also, don’t waste your workouts by having bad eating habits. It all
works together.

Something you might not know about me is?
Mindy – I don’t like dressing up (honestly I’d prefer to just have workout clothes on all the time)
and I don’t like being alone. I’ve got to have someone to talk too!
Charlie – I can’t think of anything but I am sure Mindy can and will glad to use her words to talk
to you about it. 🙂
