When did you start doing CrossFit?
April 2013, my wife Kelli, came home from a dinner with her girlfriend, Jenica Alvarez, and said I am going to sign up for CrossFit for three months with Jenica. After Kelli explained what CrossFit was, it sounded cool however at the time had no desire to change up my workout routine. Fast forward three months, having listened to Kelli rave about the workouts and seeing the physical results, I could not resist a Saturday “bring a friend” workout and so my first partner workout was on September 21, 2013 with Kelli… after completing “Girls Gone Wild” I was addicted! PS any CrossFit workout that is named after a “Girl” is BRUTAL and needless to say a WOD with “Girls” in it is outrageous… “Girls Gone Wild” is “Fran” then “Elizabeth” then “Karen”… google that one for fun and try it!
I love endurance WODs (30 minutes or more) that allow me fight the battle in the basement! No better feeling than proving to myself that I can demonstrate mental fortitude and physical strength to overcome the worst of the worst. That being said, I cannot narrow my “Favoite WOD” down to just 1 so here are my top 3: 1. MURPH (20 lbs. vest) 2. Schmalls 3. Grace (fast and furious)
Least Favorite WOD?
Honestly, I don’t have a least favorite WOD however I do have one WOD I did not finish and it haunts me to this day… KALSU! I will challenge that one again though.
Clean & Jerk
Least favorite lift?
Call it what you want, it’s more of a movement than a lift but I despise Thrusters!
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.).
A little bit about myself… blessed with an incredible wife, Kelli, and two beautiful daughters, Addison and Kate. As a family, we are actively engaged members of Browns Bridge Church along with many other members of CS&F! Having grown up on the beach in CA, shredding every inch of CO backcountry on a snowboard, as a family we do our best to spend our free time somewhere outside enjoying nature like boating 6 months of the year on Lanier! If you ask Kelli what I do for work she calls me Chandler from the show Friends… in reality, I work for the largest, oldest company in the world, Siemens, and am responsible for running one of our businesses in the Americas.
What were you doing before CrossFit?
While we lived in CO, I cycled competitively and trained with professional endurance athletes which enabled me to build a solid engine. Couple that with playing competitive ice hockey, I was able to transition to CrossFit fairly well, however learning the movements proved to be a challenge I still have a high desire to improve on!
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?
Once I regained consciousness and picked myself up off of the floor having completed “Girls Gone Wild”, I was addicted! PS re-read that last statement with your clean filter on… “Girls Gone Wild” is “Fran” then “Elizabeth” then “Karen”… google that one for fun and try it!
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
The goals I set for myself when I joined CrossfFit two years ago remains the same as they do today: stay safe and healthy, gain strength (physical and mental) and grow long lasting relationships within the CS&F the community.
Have you achieved any of those goals?
Absolutely I have achieved all of the goals above and so many more… podium finishes with my workout partner Andrew Lopez have been a goal that we take great pride in accomplishment / achievement time and time again #bigblendbromance. Also, was able to earn my CrossFit Level 1 certification last year!
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym?
Cumming Strength & Fitness has been an absolute blessing to our family, our friends, our church and our community! As I travel the globe for work, I get the unique opportunity of dropping in at other CrossFit boxes and I can honestly say not one (although some come close), not one CrossFit affiliate can compare to CS&F!
Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
Without a doubt, the officially launch of our CS&F men’s group at the start of 2016 focused on capitalizing on your strengths as a husband, father, brother, friend, coworker and or workout partner, is my most special memory at CS&F!
Often times, we find ourselves asking a buddy at the gym “how are you man?” acknowledging whatever the guy just said and going about our warm up, getting ready for our next PR. CS&F wanted to develop a group of guys asking the follow up question and not accepting the one word response of “good” or “fine”. The reality is we all have a lot on our plates and life doesn’t always come with sprinkles on top. In fact more often than not, we are juggling multiple challenges at once and most of you will all agree we as men rarely turn to another guy to talk through the challenges whether they be marriage issues, work stress, financial trouble, or parental conflict, etc.
Those that have engaged have found great value in having a core group of men around us to confide in and challenge us to be better men. Like us, many of you have realized the benefits of a group of like-minded guys all focused on bettering ourselves in whatever role we take on outside of the box.
We are excited that these provide a foundation for intentional relationships that are built on authenticity, transparency, trust and accountability for our personal development. And at the end of the day, we know this group of guys care about us more than just being a workout partner.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit Cumming?
Josh Angel’s statements to CrossFit by:
- Stay in your lane!
- CrossFit is you versus you!
- There will always be someone bigger, stronger, faster than you but who cares! Be the best you that you can be!
- Focus on being: Mentally Committed. Physically Forged.
