Aleta Davis: Athlete of the Month for July

When did you start doing CrossFit?  I began the sport of CrossFit approximately 3 years ago.  Prior to CrossFit, I was a competitive gymnast at Northwind Gymnastics.  After suffering a back injury, I was told by the doctors that the sport of gymnastics was no longer a good idea.  Even though I was devastated, I came to CrossFit Cumming with an open mind.  I fell completely in love with the sport of CrossFit and CrossFit Cumming.

Favorite WOD?  I don’t particularly have a favorite WOD.  I would say that my favorite movements that I like to do in a WOD include overhead squats, pull ups, box jumps, toes to bar, handstand walk, and double-unders.

Least Favorite WOD?  My least favorite WOD would have to be Fran.

Favorite Lift?  My favorite lift is a Snatch.

Least favorite lift? My least favorite lift is a Thruster.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

My name is Aleta Davis.  I am currently 16 years old.  During my childhood, I was a competitive gymnast up until I was about 13 years old.   At the age of 13 years old, I found out that I had a fracture in my back on L5 and my butt bone, along with spondylolisthesis (slippage in spine). This is when I was told I had to quit gymnastics for good, and I was devastated.  So, I spent a year in therapy recovering from my back injury and finally got released to start some type of exercise.  I knew that I wanted to compete and have a fun team while working out.  My therapist from Champion Physical Therapy, Matt Foltz, suggested for me to try CrossFit Cumming because it was a brand new gym and he said there were great owners and athletes to work out with.  The purpose for me trying CrossFit was to strengthen my interior core muscle to hopefully strengthen by back.  I was so excited to start; I couldn’t contain myself.  I remember walking in and saying “I want to be strong looking just like Mrs. Jill.” From diet change and help from the coaches, I was able to move again and compete with a great team which supported me and helped me to feel stronger and healthier.  CrossFit has changed my life all around in the most positive ways.

What were you doing before starting at Cumming Strength and Fitness?  I was a competitive Level 8/9 gymnast.

What were your thoughts after your first workout?  Oh my goodness, I had mixed emotions after doing ½ Karen which is a CrossFit WOD.  My thoughts after my first workout were “Wow, that was really painful,” but I was also thinking, “This is just the beginning of something fun, great, and different.”

What were your goals when joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?  My goals when starting CrossFit were just as simple as being and feeling healthy and strong again. Thanks to all of the coaches at CF&S for helping me achieve that goal.

Have you achieved any of those goals?  I have achieved being and feeling healthier and stronger and many other greater goals than I thought I could ever reach when starting at CS&F.  During my first year of competition, I attended a competition called Wodapalooza which was held in Miami, FL.  With hard work and determination, I took 1st place in the teen division at this event. That lit a spark under me to start training heavier to be a more well-rounded athlete.

Has CS&F affected your life outside the Gym?  CS&F has affected my life in so many positive ways.  Anything and everything I do from hiking, biking, running, and swimming has become so much easier ever since I started my CrossFit journey.  CrossFit has taught me to never give up even when things are difficult.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?  I have had so many special memories and achievements. One achievement that stands out the most would be getting my first ring-muscle up.  That was a major accomplishment.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness?  To a newbie just joining Cumming Strength and Fitness, I would say that with hard work and determination you will see a tremendous improvement in your strength and cardio in a matter of months.  Often times the skills are difficult, but it is important to remember that everyone starts at the bottom when beginning CrossFit.  Over time you will be amazed at yourself for mastering skills.  I would say to them, “Never give up.  Always strive to be the best you can possibly be.”
